Dr. Thomas Gratzer

Dr. Thomas Gratzer is a board-certified psychiatrist with over 30 years of experience in general and forensic psychiatry, primarily in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. He has served in several major hospitals, including Regions Hospital, Psych Recovery, United Hospital, and Fairview University Medical Center. Over the years, he has balanced a demanding schedule with up to 100 weekly patient visits and conducting forensic evaluations. From 1995 to 2002, Dr. Gratzer was a Senior Forensic Psychiatrist at the Minnesota Security Hospital. During this time, he also acted as a consulting psychiatrist for the Minnesota Department of Corrections, providing mental health services to youth in the Juvenile Detention Center from 1999 to 2015. His clinical expertise also extended to United Hospital, where he worked as an attending psychiatrist from 1995 to 2016, treating patients with severe psychiatric conditions. In 1997, Dr. Gratzer’s leadership was recognized when he was appointed medical staff president at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. He also dedicated himself to educating future professionals by serving as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School from 2002 to 2021. He lectured to medical students, psychiatry residents, and law students, helping shape the next generation of psychiatrists. Dr. Thomas Gratzer is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law. His commitment to the field is evident in his work on various committees, particularly those addressing issues in forensic psychiatry, such as the Sex Offender Committee. In addition to his psychiatric career, Dr. Gratzer has experience in computer science. In 1991, he won first prize for a computer program at the Manitoba Science Fair. He also co-authored a book on the TRS-80 computer, selling 10,000 copies, and contributed to developing the VP-Info programming language for IBM PCs. Dr. Thomas Gratzer has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals focusing on forensic psychiatry and related topics. Although retired, he remains engaged in mental health advocacy and regularly donates to his university’s foundation.
